Past Events, 2002Annual Picnic and Farm Tour - Aug. 18, 2002 Grenville Cattlemen's Association Annual Picnic and Tour was held Aug. 18 at the farm of Kim & Charlie Sytsma. Guests included Jack McCoubrey of Beef Improvement Ont. Jack spoke about the Source Qualified Ontario Calves program. (SQOC). Health protocols, Genetic qualifications and record keeping to develop a supply of consistent, predictable calves using specified gentics, management and health protocols. John Gillispie, a feedlot operator from Waterloo county, spoke on the importance of vaccinating calves before they go to the feedlot and why he only buys vaccinated calves. Charlie took everyone on a tour of some pasture that he renewed very cheaply by letting the cattle do most of the work. John Newman of Ontario Cattlemen's Association executive from the new expanded city of Ottawa spoke of the national ID program and the up coming Ont. Cattlemen's Association organizational review. Cattle producers and other industry stakeholders are invited to a public meeting Sept.17 in Carlton Place. (For more info call Kim at 613-924-9241) A large meal of Barbeque beef and potluck was served, along with corn on the cob boiled with the help of a steam tractor engine. After which, few belts were loosened a notch or two. Grenville cattlemen's Award of Merit was presented to two very worthy people; Bill and Jenny Playfair in honour, of all the work they have done to the benefit of the cattle industry in Grenville. Congratulations Bill and Jenny!! Thanks to Cathy and John Willougby for the corn. It was very very sweet and tasty. Thanks to Robert and Honey Hartley for bringing the engine and cooking the corn.
